Guard Against Overexertion

Winter weather can put an added strain on the heart. If you are not used to regular exercise, activities such as shoveling snow or pushing a car can put a physical strain on your body, and in some case, can lead to a heart attack or can make other medical conditions worse.

If you go outside to shovel snow, do a few stretching exercises to warm up your body. Make sure to take frequent breaks, change out of wet clothes if necessary, and drink plenty of fluids.

This information highlights examples of safety precautions you can consider to protect yourself, your family, and your property. This list is not meant to be all-inclusive. Moreover, a particular precaution may not be effective or appropriate in all circumstances. We encourage you to use your own good judgement about what's appropriate.
